Can Canvas Detect Screenshots or Screen Sharing?

Canvas cannot detect a screenshot or a Discord, Zoom or Teams screen share. No browser lets a website see either. What it can log is the focus change some screenshot tools cause, and what gets students in trouble is where the screenshot ends up. Here is the full picture.

Short answer. No. Canvas cannot detect a screenshot, and it cannot detect a screen share on Discord, Zoom, Teams or anything else. Browsers do not tell websites about either one. Two things can still catch up with you: some screenshot tools briefly take focus away from the quiz, which the log records, and screenshots of exam questions have a habit of turning up somewhere a professor can find them.

Why Canvas cannot see screenshots

Taking a screenshot happens in your operating system, not in the web page. When you press Print Screen, Cmd+Shift+4 or Win+Shift+S, the OS copies the pixels on your display. The browser is not asked, and the page inside it is not told. There is no browser event a website can listen for that means "the user took a screenshot".

The same is true of screen recording and screen sharing. Discord, Zoom and Teams capture your display at the operating system level. Canvas has no way to know that the pixels it drew are being sent somewhere else.

This is the same principle behind most of what Canvas cannot see. The longer list is in Canvas Privacy Myths.

What can show up: focus changes

Canvas does record when the quiz page loses focus, logged as "stopped viewing". Some screenshot methods cause exactly that:

Screenshot method Moves focus off the quiz?
Print Screen key (Windows) Usually no
Win+Shift+S / Snipping Tool overlay Often yes, the overlay takes focus
Cmd+Shift+3 or Cmd+Shift+4 (Mac) Usually no
Cmd+Shift+5 toolbar, or clicking the thumbnail preview Can, if you click the toolbar or preview
Phone photo of the screen No
Clicking into Discord or Zoom to start or manage a share Yes

Screenshot tools change between OS versions, so treat "usually" as "usually". If you need to know for certain on your machine, test it on an ungraded practice quiz. What triggers the event, and what does not, is covered in Canvas Stopped Viewing Flag Explained.

Screen sharing on Discord, Zoom and Teams

A screen share that is already running does not change focus, so it does not create log entries on its own. Canvas sees nothing. The risks are elsewhere:

  • Clicking into the call app to start sharing, read a message or unmute takes focus from the quiz. Each one is a stopped viewing event.
  • Notifications from the call app popping up can steal focus too.
  • The other person. Someone watching your screen and messaging answers means you are reading their messages somewhere. If that somewhere is on the same computer, you are clicking away to read them.

Where screenshots actually get people caught

Screenshots are invisible to Canvas, but they do not stay invisible:

  • Question uploads. Professors regularly search Chegg, Quizlet, Course Hero and Discord servers for their own exam questions. A screenshot uploaded while the quiz is still open is the most direct evidence there is, and these sites respond to academic integrity requests. See Do Chegg and Course Hero Report You?
  • Group chats. Screenshots shared to a class group chat get forwarded, and one person in the chat ends up talking to the professor.
  • Identical answers. If the screenshot was sent to someone for help, everyone who used that help tends to pick the same answers, including the same wrong ones.

None of these involve Canvas detecting anything. They are why "Canvas can't see screenshots" is true and still not the whole story.

Under proctoring, everything changes

  • Respondus LockDown Browser blocks screenshot keys and screen capture, and closes or blocks many screen sharing and recording apps before the exam starts.
  • Honorlock, Proctorio and ProctorU can record your screen and webcam. A screenshot is not detected by Canvas, it is simply on the recording. Several of these services also look for screen sharing and remote access software.

If your quiz is proctored, assume screenshots and screen shares are visible or blocked. ProctorU, Respondus and Honorlock: How Detection Actually Works covers each one.

What about the Canvas mobile app?

The Canvas Student app on a phone or tablet does not report screenshots to your instructor either. The same rule applies: moving to another app during a quiz is treated as leaving, but the screenshot itself is not recorded.

The honest takeaway

Screenshots and screen shares are invisible to Canvas, but the workflow around them usually is not. A screenshot is normally the first step of getting help somewhere else, and that "somewhere else" is what creates the focus changes, the shared wrong answers and the uploads.

If you are screenshotting questions to get an answer from an AI, there is a shorter path. See AI That Answers Questions From Screenshots for when that workflow makes sense, and the next section for when it doesn't.

Skip the screenshot entirely

ExamClutch reads the question text and options straight from the Canvas page, so there is nothing to capture, crop or send anywhere. It gets the answer and applies it on the same page with a double-click. No screenshot, no second window, no focus change.

It works on Canvas Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes, plus Blackboard, Brightspace, Moodle, Schoology, McGraw Hill and Google Forms, and handles multiple choice, multi-select, dropdown and fill-in-the-blank. It never submits for you, and it does not run inside lockdown browsers.

FAQ

Will my professor get a notification if I screenshot a Canvas quiz? No. Canvas does not know a screenshot happened, so there is nothing to notify anyone about.

Can Canvas detect the Snipping Tool? It cannot detect the tool. On many Windows setups the Snipping Tool overlay takes focus, which Canvas logs as stopped viewing, the same as any other focus change.

Can Canvas detect Discord? No. Canvas cannot see Discord running, a call in progress or a screen share. It can only log the quiz losing focus if you click into Discord.

Can Canvas detect screen recording? Not on its own. Proctoring software that records your screen is a different matter, and LockDown Browser blocks most recording apps.
